It's the question on everyone's lips. Well, everyone on this side of the Atlantic anyway. How much will the iPhone cost when it eventually goes on sale here in the UK?
Well, we've been doing some number-crunching to try and figure it out, and we think we've got an answer. The 4GB iPhone will cost around £325 here, while the 8GB model will cost £395. At least, that's our guess.
We based it on the evidence that Apple isn't keen on operator subsidies for the iPhone, meaning that Apple will be in charge of the price. Then we looked at the US-to-UK price differences of four other Apple products - the new iMac, the 30GB iPod, and the basic Apple TV and Macbook products.
So, in pure numbers, the UK price of the 2GHz new iMac is 66.64% of the US model (i.e. £799 to £1,199). The basic Apple TV is 66.55% of its US version (£199 to $299), while the cheapest Macbook is 63.60% (£699 to $1,099. The 30GB iPod bucks the trend, by being 71.88% of the US dollar total (£179 to $249).
Overall, then, let's take it as around 66%, and remember that if Apple is controlling the sale price of the iPhone, it may well follow the US-to-UK difference of these other devices. Well, in the US, the 4GB iPhone is $499, while the 8GB model is $599. 66% of 499 equates to £329, while 66% of 599 equates to £395 (call it £399 for neatness' sake).
That's our best guess, anyway. We're off for a lie down now: all that maths takes its toll...
